The FJ-3 Fury. A navalized variant of the F-86 Sabre that was intended to bring a swept wing fighter to the Navy. While it only served a few years due to low speed handling issues it is an interesting instance of one service looking to the other for a suitable aircraft. The Navy would later return the favor with the F-4 Phantom.

This actually one of my favorite stories in aviation, because one of the USAF's greatest early successes was a Navy aircraft, born and bred.

It's only been in the last 5 years or so that I learned about this. An interesting one of "anything you can do, I can do better" within a single airframe platform.

Using design elements from the P-51. Awesome stuff.

If someone told me that one of the defense contractors was going to base their next aircraft on P-51 design elements, I wouldn't care one bit.

I saw this beauty at an air show in Kingsville, TX back in 2012. Interesting how, in those early days of Naval jet aviation, they still took off and landed with the canopy open.
